Eugene D. Smith

Gene Smith is a well-known and respected
figure in intercollegiate athletics. As the Director of Athletics
at The Ohio State University, Gene brings a wealth of knowledge to
the Alden & Associates advisory team. Gene has recently served as
the Director of Athletics at Arizona State University and Iowa
State University. During his tenure at ISU, he was elected to the
presidency of the National Association of Collegiate Director of
Athletics (NACDA). Gene also served on the NCAA President's
Commission Liaison Committee. A member of the NCAA Executive
Committee, he was named to the NCAA's Management Council in May
1996. Smith was named to the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee in
February 1999 and currently serves on the NCAA Working Committee
to Study Basketball Issues.
Prior to
his arrival at Iowa State, Gene served as athletic director at
Eastern Michigan University for seven years. He earned a
bachelor's degree in business administration from the University
of Notre Dame in 1977. He earned three varsity football letters as
a defensive end at Notre Dame. Upon his graduation from Notre
Dame, he served as an assistant football coach at his alma mater.
He went to work for two years as a marketing representative for
IBM prior to joining East Michigan as an assistant athletic
director.
